Salted Caramel (get younger) Vegan Delight Bites

Keep these in the fridge for a get younger, snack-sized treat! They won’t last long.

SALTED CARAMEL VEGAN DELIGHT BITES

Ingredients

Salted Caramel Vegan Bites

2 Tbsp ground flaxseed
5 Tbsp ground almonds
1 tsp chia seeds
1 tsp sesame seeds
1/2 tsp spirulina
2 Tbsp cocoa powder
1 Tbsp vegan protein powder
1 Tbsp maple syrup
1 Tbsp melted coconut oil
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Extra sesame seeds and a couple shakes of pink Himalayan salt for rolling in at the end.

In a bowl, mix all the ingredients together until they are fully incorporated and the texture of clay. If the mixture is too dry, add more coconut oil; if it’s too wet, add more protein powder.

Divide into 6 rounded spoonfuls, roll them into balls, then roll into extra sesame seeds/pink Himalayan salt mixture.

Chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Store in air-tight container in the refrigerator.

Externally Yours

What we eat affects our skin really, really a lot. This we know. But, externally, what we put on our faces is just as important. Here’s a simple 3 step guide to achieving your glow.

THREE STEPS TO GLOW

1. Use an organic cleansing balm or just plain ol’ cold pressed, organic coconut oil to remove all traces of makeup. Then remove with a hot-to-the-touch, wet face flannel, washcloth or muslin cloth. Don’t be afraid to scrub a little. Let your intuition reign.

2. Use a cotton ball or cotton gauze dipped in an exfoliating toner. Here’s 3 to choose from: Pixi Glow Tonic, Clinique Exfoliating Cleansing Tonic, or The Ordinary Glycolic Acid. This removes excess dirt, debris and dead skin cells. Feel free to gently swab in an upward motion on your décolletage and neck. Always do a test patch before using new product.

3. Lastly, use collagen cream or gel to boost your collagen stores. Collagen is necessary to bind the skin cells together, resulting in a smooth complexion. Collagen stores decline as we age. That is as simple as it needs to be. Be gentle and always, always patch test first.

Healthy-er Dark Chocolate Bundt Cake

When you need cake, but it also needs to be healthy!

Dark Chocolate Bundt

The yummy cake:

1 cup unsalted grass-fed organic butter
1/3 cup cocoa powder (Green & Blacks)
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 cup filtered water
2 cups white or wholegrain spelt flour, plus more for dusting
1-3/4 cups coconut sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
2 organic eggs
1/2 cup authentic Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

The glossy glaze:

4 ounces/100 grams dark chocolate, finely chopped
1-1/2 tablespoons pure Maple syrup
1/2 cup Oatly! Single cream
1-1/2 tablespoons coconut sugar

Heat oven to 150 C in a fan-assisted oven, 180 C in a regular oven. Butter and flour a Bundt pan and set aside.

Combine butter, cocoa powder, salt and water in a small saucepan and gently heat until melted. Remove from heat and set aside.

Mix together the flour, sugar and baking soda in a large bowl. Add the melted butter mixture slowly and mix or whisk. Add the eggs, one at a time, and whisk/mix until completely blended. Add in the Greek yogurt and vanilla extract. Mix/whisk until smooth.

Pour into the prepared Bundt pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean, 40 to 45 minutes. Let cake cool before inverting onto a rack.

Make the glaze by placing the chocolate and maple syrup into a bowl and set aside. Combine the cream and sugar in a saucepan and heat until very hot and sugar is dissolved. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and whisk until smooth and glossy.

Pour glaze over the cooled cake. Ready to serve. Fabulously healthy-er for every occasion! Continue reading

Be Your Own Sweetheart

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples. It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate your relationship with yourself or others. Here are 9 ways to do just that.

1. Buy yourself your favourite fresh flower bouquet and display in an extravagant vase in a prominent position. Every glance at it celebrates you.

2. Buy your favourite takeaway meal for one and dine by candlelight or soft lighting (it’s key). Accentuate with a film or bubble bath, or both.

3. Send your best mates Valentine Day cards with a chocolate inside, or meet up at a pub or restaurant with them on the day.

4. Create yourself an indulgent spa night. Collect rose petals, essential oils, a face masque, and all your favourite lotions and potions; take time to appreciate yourself.

5. Ask your mom or dad out! Get a selfie with them. Tell them how much you love and appreciate their support. If not them, a sibling or bestie will do.

6. Treat yourself to a mani/pedi of your choice. Make it on the night and admire your new glossies all night long.

7. Curl up with your best novel in your favourite PJs. Nothing more needed.

8. Research and book your next vacation or holiday! Much fun to be had.

9. Get traditional. Buy yourself a small box of chocolates and a half bottle of champagne and enjoy a little “me” time. You ARE worth it, every penny.

Up Your Sunny Game

To cheer ourselves up this dreary January, we decided to up our sunny game. Looking forward to spring and summer, and at the very least some winter sun, we found some cool sunnies to protect our peepers. Proper UV protection for your eyes will keep them youthful in every way, so wear sunglasses every day, but especially when it’s sunny. British standards for sunglass UV protection will be on the label of any sunnies you buy. Look for the CE mark and British standard, UV400 label, and a 100% UV protection statement.

Choose any lens colour

This type of protection will ward off eye wrinkles, damage to the whites of the eyes, and provide complete UV protection to the backs of the eyes too. For maximum cover, choose glasses that cover the sides of the eyes, or ‘wrap around’. Bigger is better protection. The lens colour doesn’t matter. Polarised lenses only cut glare, not UV.

We found a pair of Cebe sunglasses, with great all around protection and a reasonable price tag. Cebe is the oldest sports eyewear brand and proud of their 125 year heritage, noted for their optically correct lenses and durable frames. A fabulously trustworthy brand for all weather and all sports eye protection, besides looking cool.

Mask It (every chance you get)

Masking is here to stay. There is no better way to both nourish your skin and get an instant boost of glow. It’s a way to pamper your skin, to rescue it, or to revitalise and prepare it for a big event. Three ways:

GlamGlow is our current favourite, with a mask for every situation, i.e., clearing, youth-inducing, hydrating, and firming. Our currrent favourite GlamGlow GlitterMask Gravity Mud Firming Treatment. Ask for sample pouches at Sephora (great to travel with).

Do it yourself with clay. Bentonite clay is my go-to, but remember it must be alternated with your retinol days! Bentonite benefits are endless, really; heals and regenerates skin tissue, draws out toxins, treats acne, unclog and shrinks pores, prevents blackheads, reduces appearance of scars, excellent exfoliation, evens out skin tone, leaves skin soft and glowing!

You can use this mask daily or weekly, but the first few times please experiment. (If you feel burning, immediately rinse off.) Mix a tablespoon of bentonite clay with a teaspoon of filtered water and a teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar (with mother, preferably). Smooth onto face, neck and décolletage and leave on for 10-20 minutes. Then rinse off with warm water. Your skin will feel amazing! Tone and moisturise as normal.

*If you use a spoon to mix them, make sure it isn’t metal because this causes metals to leach from the spoon into the clay, making the clay not as effective.

*If you have sensitive skin, apply a thinner layer and leave the mask on for a shorter time. Then increase the frequency depending on how your skin feels.

*Do not apply retinol products on the same days as you mask; this has the capacity to burn skin!

Or if a sleeping mask is more your thing, we love AMOREPACIFIC Moisture Bound Sleeping Recovery Masque. Apply evenly over cleansed and toned skin in place of your night moisturiser, let set for five minutes and sleep your way back to youth.

Do the Mixie Mixie, And Turn It All About

Mix it up for youth…be an alchemist!

It’s time to discover the magic of alchemy. The reasons to mix are endless…getting to know your skin’s needs and wants, trying out new products/samples, and using up product vestiges. It’s creative, essential (well, we think so) and lets you adapt your skin and hair care to any environment! How does it work? Take a good look at your skin and hair care products; get them all out. Next, assess your skin and hair, asking yourself what products are your favourites, but perhaps could use a bit more something. Start with a few drops of serum or gel (or both) in the palm of your hand with an SPF and a facial moisturizer or tint. Stir with fingers to mix and warm, then apply slowly and gently to face, avoiding the delicate eye area for a day look. Note: only use dedicated eye products around the eyes. Notice how the mixture soaks in, maybe add a couple drops of facial oil if your skin is particularly dry. Massage in slowly and gently to stimulate both skin and lymph; pause, pat, push and palpate the products into skin and hair; include neck and décolletage, always!

For hair too? Yes! Try a detangling conditioner with a dollop of hair mask and apply to the ends of your hair, or add a few drops of Fudge’s Paintbox Creative Conditioner Hair Color into your regular conditioner for a new slant on color, or combine a few drops of clarifying shampoo to your moisturizing shampoo and get the best of both worlds. If your conditioner is a bit too heavy, add a small handful of Epsom salt to it and mix; apply conditioner as normal. Even try mixing a few drops of your favorite essential oil, body oil, or coconut oil into your regular body moisturiser (or all three). The sky is the limit, and you will instinctively know your skin and hair needs with a bit of exploring.

Our current favourite is SBC Collagen Gel with a big pump of Ultrasun Professional Glimmer SPF 20 for day, or with a dropper of Balance Me Radiance Face Oil (or coconut oil) for night, with a drop of whatever serum we have lying around!

Save time, and money (now you can use up all those samples), get your creativity flowing, and get skin and hair glowing! A little bit of alchemy does a body good.

Batch It Up For Youth

5 Tablespoons gluten free oatmeal
2 Tablespoons chia seeds
1 Tablespoon maple syrup or liquid stevia (any flavour)
1 Teaspoon of vanilla
Add twice the volume of almond milk and STIR

Now, make 5 of this recipe in glass containers with lids. In the morning, top with fruit and nuts (we chose dried Bing cherries, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds), and you’re out the door.

Arugula/Rocket Salad with Cold Potatoes

Boil and cool new potatoes (or any small waxy potato). Fry two finely sliced small onions in some avocado oil until nearly crispy. At that point, add some curry powder (tandoori would be great). If not, then some garlic and oregano? Add salt, pepper and a vegetable stock cube, or seasoning of your choice. Cut up cooled potatoes and swirl in the onion pan to coat with flavours.

Divide into 5 glass containers with potatoes on one side, and rocket/arugula on the other side with goat cheese or Parmesan cheese shavings scattered on top.

Cut up a LOT of your favourite veg, at least twice what you think you need! We chose:

6 jalapeños (use gloves to cut these up!)
2 onions, red and white
1 yellow bell peppers
1 orange bell peppers
1 red bell pepper
1 courgette/zucchini
1 bunch of asparagus
1 punnet of cherry tomatoes

Cut all veg into 2″ x 2″ chunks, add the cherry tomatoes in whole. Drizzle with avocado oil, pink Himalayan or sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper, and toss. Roast in the oven on 350 deg F for about 25 minutes (or whatever it takes). Take out when the edges of the vegetables are turning golden brown.

Cook 1 cup of your favourite brown rice. When done, stir in zest and juice of one lime.

Divide up into 5 glass containers, and refrigerate. It’s all ready to add some black beans, and heat in the oven for suppers! You can top with goat or Gorgonzola cheese for an added fillip!

Mani the Pedi

The all-important mani/pedi is so completely necessary to look and feel younger all week long! We love it, and here’s why.

Manicures improve the overall health and texture of hands and fingernails, besides preventing nail damage. The massage and exfoliation that accompanies a manicure improves skin health, increases blood circulation and evens out skin tone, helping hands to look younger immediately. Always exfoliate properly before a mani/pedi. Short fingernails are youthful, practical and fashionable; no longer than the end of your fingertips, and a square-ish shape is healthier.

Why a pedicure? Because during a typical day, feet endure a cumulative force of several hundred tons, and healthy feet are vital to overall health. The average person walks approximately four miles every day or 115,000 miles in a lifetime. A bit of maintenance is necessary! We suggest filing toenails straight across to prevent ingrown nails.

Though you can do it yourself (and that’s great too), a professional pedicure is a good remedy for tired feet and legs. A pedicure with a foot massage will increase blood circulation and help relax tired muscles. The deep moisturizing and exfoliation of a pedicure will help eliminate cracked heels and soften calluses.

Don’t underestimate the emotional benefits of a pedicure either. It allows you to relax with your feet up without a care in the world (at least as long as your pedicure appointment). Having toes painted in the perfect shade of nude, pink or glamorous red will definitely lift your mood for the week!!

After a good bout of exfoliating hands and feet, give yourself (or get) a mani/pedi with a nude or buff-coloured polish (or any colour that flatters your unique skin tone) once a week. Our personal favourite colour is Chanel’s Rouge Noir (it’s lusciously decadent, timeless and forever flattering). And don’t forget the all-important shiny top coat every other day (Seche Vite is fabulous!) to make it last. Moisturise with a good hand or body oil afterwards.
